Are you ready for the return to the office?
As we work through the Government Road Map for the eventual easing of lockdown, many employers are preparing to welcome staff back into the office. It is expected that employers will see a rise in musculoskeletal discomfort as a direct result of working from home. Even before COVID-19, keyboard work was cited as the third biggest work-related cause of musculoskeletal conditions, overtaking heavy machine operation according to a report published by the HSE in November 2020. This risk was heightened during the pandemic with many workers operating from unsuitable home workstations.
How much have work-related cases increased?
In 2019, only 1.42% of workers experienced work-related musculoskeletal disorders. According to ONS, 46.6% of British employees did some work at home during lockdown. As a result, 2020 saw an astronomical 37.70% of musculoskeletal cases connected to work. A survey completed by Institute of Employment Studies launched in March 2020 has shared some alarming findings:
- 55% of workers surveyed suffered back pain
- 58% of workers surveyed suffered neck pain
- 56% of workers surveyed suffered shoulder pain
- 60% worry they are taking less exercise
- 75% report their employers have not carried out a homeworking H&S assessment
Let us help to Reduce Musculoskeletal Discomfort
At DSE Assessments Ltd we understand the challenges employers have faced to ensure staff are working safely at home. For many we have assisted with our range of online homeworking assessments. However, as we start to turn our focus back to the office, we’d like to remind you of the services we offer to help ease your staff back to the office.
1) DSE Assessor Training Workshop
Having your own in-house trained DSE Assessors will help you to respond quickly to DSE related issues. This popular and ‘hands-on’ course will focus on the ‘Importance of Good Posture’ training and equip your staff with the tools they need to become a competent DSE Assessor. This course is held on client premises and is available throughout the UK. Completing this course prior to staff returning to the office will put you one step ahead and make sure you are ready to respond to any reported discomfort quickly and efficiently.
2) One-to-One DSE Assessment
A comprehensive assessment completed with the user on site. The key advantage of this option is that we can deal with issues at the time of the assessment. In our experience, a simple adjustment to the workstation can make all the difference to comfort. Our assessments include training on the ‘Importance of Good Posture, increasing awareness for good practice, reducing future risk.
3) Online Office DSE Risk Assessment
If like so many of our clients you would like to complete an assessment program to assess the extent of staff comfort on their return to the office, we can implement a dedicated online assessment program. Unlike many other online packages, there are no minimum or maximum number of assessments and we oversee the entire process management on your behalf. This is by far, the quickest and easier method to gain information on the prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort in your organisation.
We hope the above information is helpful and if you would like further information on any of the above services, please let me know.
Good luck with the next stage and we look forward to hopefully seeing you again soon.
